That was almost four years ago, yet there is no electricity to be had here. Hridaychak is not alone in the darkness. Over 56 per cent of the rural Indian population does not have access to electricity. In absolute terms, anywhere between 300 and 400 million Indians, almost the population of the United States, live without electricity, their nights occasionally lit by kerosene lamps. Not that the rest of India has adequate power; most gated communities in its cities are sustained by private diesel generators.

I had no response; it was one of those rhetorical questions activists pose. How, Anwer asked, could India waste electricity playing matches in the night when thousands of villages like Hridaychak do not yet have electricity? He just could not wrap his head around it. It was around this time that the village of Hridaychak began to occupy my mind. Hitting his forties now, Anwer has a patchy beard a la Che Guevara. But ask him about his role model, and he promptly names his uncle Motali Khan, who operated under the nom de plume Comrade Arjun Singh.

Until about two decades ago, a Unani doctor from the state government used to live in Hridaychak, renting a room from Khan’s family. Possibly, someone still draws a salary as the assigned doctor. One can’t say for sure, there are so many uncertainties in this village. Mohammed Saifullah Ansari, who has been practising medicine for the past fifteen years, occupies the room next to the Unani centre. He is not a fully qualified doctor, but his registered medical practitioner licence allows him to take care of primary health care.
